Going around a foreign city is sometimes daunting, especially if it is a foreign-speaking city, and especially if that city has a reputation of not being too tourist-friendly. Okay, so you want to go around Paris but are intimidated by the Parisness of it all. Just how do you go around?

Learn the basic phrases so you can speak your way into asking for directions, if needed. “S’il vous plait” will go a long way while “Merci” will certainly make a Parisian notice you. While Parisians are more reserved than their American counterparts, they will still be willing to help you if you have shown that you are a sincere traveler wanting to explore their beautiful city.
