Home exchange is a great way to visit and stay in other places without having to pay rent while you are there. The money you save can be so significant that it can amount to a good luggage full of souvenirs, or your next trip. Home exchange is fun, and it really represents a sense of adventure. But the caveat in home exchange is that it is an “exchange” program, and the exchange in discussion is none other than, your home.
If you are looking for home exchange, remember that both of you need to be satisfied with the arrangement. It is very important that you are candid, so there are no misunderstandings that may result to a disrupted vacation, or worse, a broken home. Are there some things that are off limits, like the car? Or if it is included in the package, what are the arrangements for fuel and cleaning?
Remember that those occupying your home may come from a different country and as such, will have a different culture. What is common sense to you may not be unheard of to them. Do you allow flushing toilet papers in the bowl, or should they dispose them some other way? What’s the schedule of garbage collection, and is there other visitors they should expect, and what should they answer when the phone rings? Do you have pets, a huge garden, and other items they need to tend to? Does the dog become very noisy or are they aggressive?
These are just some of the items you should discuss with your home exchange friend. Allow for ample time to discuss so that both of you will have a grand time in each other’s home.
