If you’ve seen The Holiday with Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jack Black and Jude Law, then you know what a home exchange program is. That’s when you swap your home to somebody else, so that you can stay in another place without having to pay for board and lodging. Of course, The Holiday’s set up is quite on the better side, what with Cameron’s spanking modern home, and Kate Winslet’s Surrey home isn’t bad either. While not all home exchanges will have the same amenities, it is a real way to see the world around without having to spend a lot.
We all know that rent during a holiday is sometimes the dealbreaker, especially when you are on a tight budget. While there are seat sales and other promos given by airlines, hotels and lodgings will not be so generous with discounts, especially during peak season. Exchanging a home with someone who wants to stay in your place of the world is ideal. Staying in a real home, as opposed to a hotel or another tourist place will also give you a more cultural flavor.
There are many legitimate groups and networks that facilitate these home transfers. Of course, it is sometimes risky to have a deal with somebody you don’t know and these groups and networks help travelers get the best match up, and it will also help you stay away from phony travellers. Home stay had even more advantages than just the free rent. You don’t have to worry about feeding the cats and the dogs, watering the plants, and ensuring that the trash get collected. And with the internet, all of these will be so easy to do, and you will earn yourself a friend in the process.
